President Mustafa Akıncı said that moving forward on the Cyprus problem is not possible by unilateral steps and added that the Greek Cypriot leadership should respond to the steps taken by the Turkish Cypriot side.

In his speech at an event, President Akıncı mentioned the Cyprus problem and reminded that he will meet with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres in New York at the end of this month.

Expressing that the steps taken on the Cyprus problem should be mutual, Akıncı stressed that only one side’s steps are not enough to move forward. Furthermore, stressing that the Turkish Cypriot side did its utmost at the meetings held in Mont Pelerin, Geneva and Crans Montana, President Akıncı said that the stage reached is critical, and the position of the UNFICYP has become debatable. Akıncı also said that the Cyprus problem cannot continue for 50 years more, and if a result oriented solution process with a specific calendar occurs and political will and determination is shown, the Turkish Cypriot side will give support again.
