Ertuğruloğlu: “It is not the methodology but the mindset that must change on Cyprus negotiations”

Foreign Minister Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu has emphasized that it is not the methodology but the mindset that must change if the Cyprus negotiation process is to succeed.

Foreign Minister Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu was speaking about the latest on the Cyprus talks and other regional developments during an interview on Ada TV.

Stating that a forced partnership or agreement would be fundamentally unsustainable, Ertuğruloğlu said that if a new partnership is to be established in Cyprus, it must be built on a solid basis and based on equal sovereignty.

Noting that the Greek Cypriot side wants the Turkish Cypriots to give up one of their incontestable rights, which is equal sovereignty, Ertuğruloğlu said that there is a “mindset problem” in the negotiations, but added that there is still a chance of success in the negotiations if the Greek Cypriot side are willing to accept the Turkish Cypriots as their equal partners.

Ertuğruloğlu also noted that the Greek Cypriot side have oppressed the Turkish Cypriots under the various embargos, kicked them away from the partnership, monopolised opportunities as if they are the sole Cypriot state and continued the negotiations in bad faith.
