Project of the century about to finish

“TRNC Water Supply Project”, which is being called “the project of the century”, will become operational on 7^th August as the last component gets added. As part of the project, the water pipe constructed under the sea, which is currently 66.5 kilometres long, runs from the Alaköprü dam in Mersin to Northern Cyprus.

According to the information obtained by Anadolu Agency reporters, due to completion of the water pipeline, there will be a ceremony on Friday, 7 August in the TRNC with the participation of the Turkish Minister of Forestry and Water Affairs Veysel Eroğlu.

As part of the project, which is intended to be finished by the end of this year, the construction of a 24-km-long transmission line from the Turkish side, a 3.7-km-long transmission line from the Turkish Cypriot side, and a 67-km-long transmission line from the Geçitköy water supply station has been completed.

The construction of transmission lines from the TRNC water treatment plant to Kyrenia, Famagusta and Dipkarpaz is still ongoing.

When the project terminates, 75,000,000 cubic meter (cbm) of drinking and irrigation water will be supplied from the Alaköprü dam to the Geçitköy dam in the TRNC annually through a 106-km-long pipeline. There will be a 23-km-long pipeline in the Turkish side, an 80-km-long pipeline under the sea, and a 3-km-long pipeline in the TRNC.

38 million cbm water from the dam’s reservoir will be used for drinking, and 37 million cbm water will be used for irrigation.

The project will be able to compensate for the TRNC’s projected water need for the next 50 years, and especially the irrigation water will raise the agricultural revenue of the country.
