The President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz stated that there is a window of opportunity and hope for a solution to the Cyprus problem.
Schulz met with the UN Secretary General’s Special Adviser on Cyprus Espen Barth Eide just before the conclusion of his official visit to the island and Schulz said that there is now really the possibility of an historical step forward.
Stating that there is always the full support of the European Parliament and the European Commission and Schulz said that if necessary they are ready to support a settlement in Cyprus financially. He added that there are still a lot of things to be done and that nothing is agreed until everything is agreed.
In his speech the UN Secretary General’s Special Adviser on Cyprus Espen Barth Eide stated that apart from a Cypriot problem, this is also a European problem since Cyprus is the only EU member state that is on the agenda of the UN Security Council due to its division.
Mentioning that the aim is the solution based on European principles, Eide pointed out that the economy of the island can be ensured to integrate the Euro with the help of the European Central Bank, as well as the World Bank and the IMF.
