27 September, 2016Prime Minister Hüseyin Özgürgün stressed that the Turkish Cypriot people are not obliged to have a settlement created at the mercy of the Greek Cypriot administration.
In his speech at the UN General Assembly, Özgürgün highlighted the issues which have been agreed during the 16 months of negotiations but also stated that the Greek Cypriot Leader Nikos Anastasiades continues to make obstacles to a settlement on the Island.
In a written statement, Özgürgün said that although the Turkish Cypriot side is trying to reach a fair and permanent settlement which protects the rights of both sides, the Greek Cypriot side has not shown the necessary political will to reach a settlement in 48 years of negotiations.
With this in mind, Özgürgün added, people should not be given false hope for a settlement.
