8 November, 2016“It would be wise to seek a solution in Cyprus”, President Mustafa Akıncı said, and “a formula for a solution can be found which will benefit all parties.”
President Akıncı made the statement to an AA correspondent ahead of the critical meetings with Greek Cypriot Leader Nikos Anastasiades, which will begin today and continue for five days in Mont Pelerin, Switzerland.
Stating that the framework of the five-day negotiations in Switzerland is clear, Akıncı said “In the first phase, we will work to build upon developments in four of the six chapters – administration and power sharing, the EU, property and economy – which have been agreed during the last 17 months. Then as part of the second phase, we will discuss the criteria for territorial adjustment. If we come to an agreement, we will be able to move forward to the third and the last phase in Switzerland.”
Regarding the third phase of the Switzerland summit, Akıncı said “In order to begin to talk about the territory issue, in practical terms on a map, in the third stage of the summit in Switzerland, it will be necessary to set a clear and definite date for the multilateral conference in which the issue of security and guarantees will be discussed with the guarantor powers; Turkey, Greece and the UK.”
Akıncı also noted that if a consensus could not be reached on the territory issue and the date of the multilateral conference, the map issue would not be discussed in Switzerland.
