Denktaş: “The Greek Cypriot side’s intention is to claim not only Güzelyurt, but the whole island”

28 February, 2017President Mustafa Akıncı has said that other countries in the region, as well as the TRNC, will benefit from a solution in Cyprus.
Akıncı stressed that friendship between Turkey and the whole island would be positive for the Greek Cypriots as well as Turkish Cypriots, even if only the benefits to tourism were taken into account.
Akıncı warned that new tensions could arise in the region over Eastern Mediterranean energy resources in the case of a non-solution. However, he said that if a solution is reached, the region will benefit from new areas of cooperation for all. Akıncı said that approval of the Greek Cypriot far right group, ELAM’s decision to commemorate the Enosis Plebiscite in schools was not appropriate in the context of the on-going negotiation process, and that it has made the TRNC feel uneasy.
Additionally, President Mustafa Akıncı also received the US Ambassador to Lefkoşa, Kathleen Doherty. The President’s Special Adviser on Political Affairs and History, Dr. Meltem Onurkan Samani was present at the meeting. Although the press was permitted to take some footage, the meeting was held behind closed doors, and no statement was made before or after the meeting.
