28 April, 2017The TRNC Presidency has stated that Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Anastasiades is moving away from finding a solution as the election approaches. The statement made by the Presidency evaluated the progress of the negotiation process. The statement highlights that the law which was allowed to pass through the Greek Cypriot Parliament by DİSİ and AKEL to correct the decision on marking the Enosis plebiscite in schools, has not been signed by Anastasiades, and has been referred to the Constitutional Court. “Thus”, the statement explains, “the Greek Cypriot leader Anastasiades has shunned this decision, showing that he does not respect the efforts of DİSİ and AKEL, who had passed the law to ensure the continuation of the negotiation process. He also showed once again that he does not place importance on the sensitivities of the Turkish Cypriot people “.
According to the statement, , Anastasiades’ stance is not in keeping with the spirit of negotiation process, and that it is far from being persuasive even for his own community. It also stated “We regret the non-constructive attitude of Anastasiades on this issue and also in the negotiation process, especially over the last few months. It is understood that as the elections approach, Anastasiades is moving away from finding a solution. We are confident that this attitude is clearly seen and understood by the international community as well as by Turkish Cypriots. Despite this disappointing approach by of Anastasiades, the Turkish Cypriot side will participate in the negotiations scheduled for May 2, 11 and 17, within the framework of the prior agreement”.
