7 August, 2017President Mustafa Akıncı received the UN Secretary General’s Special Adviser to Cyprus, Espen Barth Eide. Speaking to the press after the meeting, Eide stated that the report about the Cyprus negotiation process would be ready in two weeks’ time.
The President and Eide discussed the talks that have taken place over the last 27 months during their meeting. Eide noted that real progress during the negotiations started with the election of Akıncı as the President in April 2015.
Eide said that at the stage reached in the negotiations, both communities had seen ‘what an agreement would look like.’ He reiterated that efforts towards creating a democratic, economically sustainable, and united federal Cyprus, with a modern security regime and based on European values that protects the security of both sides, should continue.
“We were so close, but we could not reach a solution” said Eide, adding that he will leave the island with mixed feelings.
Eide said that during his time as Special Adviser, he had 156 meetings with the negotiation teams and 70 meetings with the two leaders during this negotiation process.
