Akıncı: “I am going to New York with a constructive attitude”

President Mustafa Akıncı, who travelled to the USA on 25^th September in order to meet with the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, stressed that he has gone to New York with a constructive attitude, wishing to reach a reasonable and feasible agreement.

Prior to his departure he made statements at Ercan Airport to the press and said, it was crystal clear that the non-solution of the island will negatively affect the two peoples in Cyprus.

Noting that the period of former negotiation processes on the Cyprus issue has ended, Akıncı said that it is now necessary to come up with a timeframe and result-oriented process and to behave with political will and determination. Akıncı also added that the time loss only serves to solidify the status quo in the country.

Akıncı said: “On the one hand progress towards a solution in Cyprus, on the other hand, cooperation in natural gas which is also our right, as well as updating the customs union relations of Turkey with the EU and thus capturing a new momentum should be seen as a development that will benefit all interested parties. In short, this should be a common vision.

Stating that they will start some high-level talks in New York starting from tomorrow, Akıncı reminded that he will meet with the UN Secretary-General Guterres at the weekend.

Emphasizing that this year’s contact is different than the other years, Akıncı reiterated that the UN Secretary General’s temporary consultant Jane Holl Lute is expected to present to Guterres the completed report following the meetings which were held with the related parties.
