21 November, 2018Spokesman of the Turkish Foreign Ministry Hami Aksoy said that exploratory drilling by Exxon Mobil around the island of Cyprus does not contribute to the stability of the region.
In response to a question Aksoy stated ‘Exxon Mobil’s initiation of a natural gas search in the so-called 10th parcel given by the Greek Cypriot Administration off the island of Cyprus does not contribute to the stability of the region. It might also change certain fragile balances for the solving of the Cyprus problem and added that they had warned the Greek Cypriot Administration that the natural resources around the island does not only belong to the Greek Cypriot Administration and to stop the unilateral hydrocarbon facilities in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Aksoy also repeated the warning to energy companies about the Greek Cypriot’s unilateral exploration and extraction. Aksoy also underlined that they will continue to take necessary diplomatic and political steps in coordination with Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus with a view to protecting the rights and interests of the Turkish Cypriot People as the equal owners of the Island, stemming from international law and added ‘we will start activities in the areas licensed by the Turkish Cypriots to Turkish Petroleum in addition to our continental shelf’.
