15 July, 2019President Mustafa Akıncı made a new proposal to the Greek Cypriot Leader Nikos Anastasiades through the UN Special Representative Office in Cyprus towards the “establishment of a joint committee” on the hydrocarbon issue.
President Akıncı conveyed the proposal to Anastasiades yesterday (14th July) through the Coordinator of the UN Good Offices Mission Sergiy Illarionov with the aim of giving Anastasiades the chance to pre-examine and to later evaluate the proposal at a tete-a-tete meeting.
President Akıncı’s new proposal is aimed at changing the issue of hydrocarbons from being an area of tension and conflict into an area of fruitful cooperation.
The proposal involves the establishment of a joint committee which will be under the supervision of the UN and which will be formed with the participation of the same number of members from both sides.
The proposal which set forward the structure, targets and methodology of the committee also includes the establishment of a fund and details on how this fund will be used.
Akıncı also sent the proposal to the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, the President of the EU Commission President Jean Claude Juncker and the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini.
