2 October, 2023‘The Biden administration is not God’: Turkish Cypriot minister eyes progress on recognition
4 October, 2023President Ersin Tatar stated that the structure that turned into a Greek Cypriot state in 1963 (the so-called Republic of Cyprus) does not have the authority to represent the entire island and the Turkish Cypriot people.
In his written statement regarding the celebrations held in South Cyprus for the establishment of the so-called Republic of Cyprus, President Tatar said; “The Partnership Republic, which was established under the equal founding partnership of the Turkish Cypriot people and the Greek Cypriot people, was transformed into a Greek Cypriot state on December 21, 1963 through attacks against our civilian population and the expulsion of Turkish Cypriot officials from state mechanisms by force of arms.”
Noting that he drew attention to the realities of Cyprus in his meeting with United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres in New York and repeated his proposal for a solution based on the existence of two sovereign equal separate states, Tatar said, “I also called on the Greek Cypriot side for dialogue towards a fair and lasting compromise. However, the Greek Cypriot side, as always, maintained its intransigent attitude.”
