25 November, 2024President Ersin Tatar met with Polish journalists in Warsaw, the capital of Poland, and evaluated the latest developments in the Cyprus issue.
According to the statement issued by the TRNC Presidency, President Tatar explained the new vision of the Turkish Cypriot side based on sovereign equality and equal international status and underlined that the international community should end the inhumane isolation imposed on the Turkish Cypriot people.
Referring to the 123-year struggle of the Polish people for independence, President Tatar said:
“The Turkish Cypriot people have inherent rights on the island and are one of the founding partners of the Republic of Cyprus, which was established in 1960 on the basis of equality. However, the Greek Cypriot side, with the aim of annexing Cyprus to Greece, excluded the Turkish Cypriots from the state administration at gunpoint and condemned my people to live in difficult conditions on the island. Our people resisted these difficulties, governed themselves and established their own state.”
President Tatar added “Despite the intensive efforts of the Turkish Cypriot side for a federal solution, the Greek Cypriot side is recognised as the sole government of the entire island, contrary to the 1960 Treaties and the realities on the island, and is treated in a wrong and unfair manner as if it can represent the Turkish Cypriot people.”
President Ersin Tatar stated that although negotiations for federation have been tried for more than fifty years, they have failed and federation negotiations have been exhausted, “It is time to think outside the framework. A realistic and sustainable agreement can be achieved only with a two-State solution in Cyprus.”
