Prime Minister Üstel: “Biased farewell message is far from reality”

Prime Minister Ünal Üstel has sternly criticized the final remarks made by Colin Stewart, the United Nations (UN) Secretary General’s Special Representative for Cyprus, as ‘a biased farewell message that is far from reality.’

According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, Prime Minister Üstel stated that during Colin Stewart’s term of office, neither serious steps were taken to build trust between the parties, nor were any concrete efforts made to lift the isolation imposed on the Turkish Cypriot people. ‘Stewart’s four-year term of office has gone down in history as a fruitless and insensitive period for the Turkish Cypriot people.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Üstel expressed his regret over Mr. Stewart’s recent statements, noting that the remarks made at the end of his mandate not only caused disappointment among the Turkish Cypriot people, but also reflected a stance incompatible with the principles of neutrality and diplomatic courtesy.

Üstel also said: “Mr. Stewart’s assertion that ‘there is no scenario for a two-state solution’ is clearly biased and detached from political reality. This approach, which disregards the political will of the Turkish Cypriot people and the right to self-determination is unacceptable.”
