Erhürman: “Protecting rights and interests of Turkish Cypriot people is my primary duty”
27 October, 2025President Tufan Erhürman pointed out that the European Parliament’s monument decision on Greek Cypriot missing persons was among the most painful examples of the persistent tendency to act as if Turkish Cypriots do not exist on the island, and stated that the necessary steps would be taken without delay with all relevant parties.
In a post, President Erhürman stressed that it was unacceptable to adopt the European Parliament’s ‘monument decision’. He added, ‘This decision demonstrated a complete lack of awareness of the work carried out by the Missing Persons Committee, which has been working on missing persons for years.’
Erhürman’s statement continued as follows:
“I would like it to be known that this decision will not be a matter we simply pass over with a mere condemnation. The necessary initiatives will be taken without delay before the European Parliament and all relevant parties.
This decision, which represents one of the most painful examples of the increasingly evident habit in recent years of acting as if Turkish Cypriots do not exist on this island, will not go unanswered. Our people will be regularly informed about the steps we take regarding this matter.”
