President Tufan Erhürman made a statement regarding the violations carried out by the Greek Cypriot farmers in the buffer zone.
Erhürman recalled that one of the proposals in the ten-point package he presented at the negotiating table was the establishment of a mechanism to ensure direct dialogue between Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot security forces. He pointed out that the aim was to enable immediate communication in the event of potential problems without any loss of time.
Stressing that “in the final days of 2025, violations carried out by Greek Cypriot farmers within the buffer zone, and even extending beyond it, caused tension, and that the Greek Cypriot leadership issued accusatory statements using unacceptable language” the President said that they immediately requested reports on the matter and contacted UN officials.
Erhürman noted that they ensured the relevant authorities engaged in dialogue with UN officials, stressing that their primary objective was to prevent incidents that escalate tensions. Furthermore, the President added that the responsibility of leaderships lies in strengthening preventive dialogue mechanisms and refraining from language or statements that would poison the atmosphere or further increase tension.
