Statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the TRNC regarding the Greek Cypriot Administration’s Assumption of the Presidency of the Council of the European Union
10 January, 2026In a written statement, Prime Minister Ünal Üstel said that the Greek Cypriot Administration’s assumption of the European Union Council Presidency under the title of the “Republic of Cyprus” while disregarding the will of the Turkish Cypriots and the historical realities in Cyprus is the most recent example of the longstanding injustice and double standards in the Cyprus issue.
Calling on the international community and particularly the European Union, to confront their historical responsibilities regarding Cyprus issue, Üstel stated, “A fair and lasting solution on the island can only be achieved if the sovereignty, equality, and security of both sides are guaranteed. Any approach that disregards the Turkish Cypriot people will never succeed. The Turkish Cypriot people will never abandon their right to self-determination. This will is clear, firm, and irreversible.”
