16 February, 2026President Tufan Erhürman returned to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) last night following his visit to New York on Tuesday where he met with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres. The meeting took place the previous day.
The President evaluated his contacts at a press conference held at Ercan Airport.
He noted that despite his busy schedule, the Secretary-General responded positively to their request for a meeting within a very short time. During this first face-to-face meeting, Erhürman stated that they had the opportunity to explain their four-point methodology proposal, share their views on confidence-building measures, and outline the developments that have taken place throughout the negotiation process to date.
President Erhürman said: “The United Nations is closely monitoring the Cyprus issue at the highest level. We will continue to remain in contact and cooperate with them at every level.”
He further stated that he conveyed to the Secretary-General, who is closely monitoring developments regarding Cyprus, the Turkish Cypriot people’s will for a solution, the four-point methodology proposal previously shared with both the public and the international community ahead of the elections, and the current stage of confidence-building measures.
Erhürman concluded by stating: “We observed that the Secretary-General clearly grasped what we intended to convey through the four point proposal.”
