Örek commemorated on the 27th anniversary of his passing

Osman Örek, former Prime Minister of the Turkish Federated State of Cyprus and one of the three Turkish Cypriot ministers in the Cabinet of the 1960 Republic of Cyprus, was commemorated at his graveside on the 27th anniversary of his passing at the Lefkoşa Cemetery.

The ceremony paid tribute to his distinguished contributions, including his role as head of the Turkish Cypriot delegation to the London Committee during the drafting of the Constitution of the 1960 Partnership Republic of Cyprus and the founding agreements.

The ceremony was attended by President Tufan Erhürman, Prime Minister Ünal Üstel, Türkiye’s Ambassador to Lefkoşa Ali Murat Başçeri, Republic’s Assembly Speaker Ziya Öztürkler, Minister of Foreign Affairs Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu, main opposition Republican Turkish Party (CTP) leader Sıla Usar İncirli, Cyprus Turkish Peace Forces Commander Lieutenant General Sebahattin Kılınç, Security Forces Commander Major General İlker Görgülü, Lefkoşa Turkish Municipality Mayor Mehmet Harmancı, as well as military officials.

Following the laying of wreaths in protocol order, the first address was delivered by Örek’s daughter, Yeşim Örek Gümüşdağ. She expressed her wish that her father were still alive to share his insights, particularly in light of the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. Referring to an unfinished interview he gave shortly before his death, she highlighted his emphasis on understanding the spirit of struggle and drawing lessons from the past.
