27 March, 2026Foreign Minister Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu stated that Israel’s idea of leasing Greek islands in the Aegean and settling its citizens there as “the product of a flawed mindset”, adding that “In my personal view, this is a repetition of the occupation project of Palestine. The mentality of the early 1900s is resurfacing. They have ambitions to take control of Cyprus and islands in the Aegean”
In a remarks to Anadolu Agency, Minister Ertuğruloğlu emphasized that the recent discussions in Israel about leasing Greek-owned islands in the Aegean Sea and settling a Jewish population there are aimed to encircling to encircle both Türkiye and the TRNC.
Ertuğruloğlu also drew attention to relations between Israel and the Greek Cypriot administration of Southern Cyprus, noting that Israel appears to be seeking expansion from Southern Cyprus toward the Aegean islands.
Reiterating his criticism, Ertuğruloğlu described the idea as “the product of a flawed mindset,” and stated that, in his view, such as a move should be regarded as a “casus belli.”
