Üstel condemns GCA’s attempts

Prime Minister Ünal Üstel, in a written statement, strongly condemned the Greek Cypriot Administration’s (GCA) systematic attempts to exert pressure and impose restrictions targeting the Turkish Cypriots people’s international contacts, economic and social life, institutions and sovereign rights.

Üstel stated that the pressure regarding the international music event planned to be held in Girne, attempts to obstruct the contacts that Presidential Undersecretary Mehmet Dana plans to hold with foreign diplomatic, claims and threats against the country’s territory – particularly in Maraş, Mağusa and Girne – and, finally, the political pressure exerted through the Immovable Property Commission, are concrete indications that the Greek Cypriot Administration’s mindset has not changed.

He accused the Greek Cypriot Administration of hypocrisy, saying that, on the one hand, it was displaying a willingness to pursue a federal solution and confidence-building measures while, on the other hand, trying to cut off Turkish Cypriots’ ties with the outside world.

Pointing out that the world must now see this hypocritical stance, Üstel said: “Attempting to obstruct an international cultural and musical event through political pressure, hindering our contacts with foreign diplomats, and making threats regarding Maraş, Mağusa and Girne do not build trust; on the contrary, they destroy it.”
