{"id":138936,"date":"2015-09-14T11:55:59","date_gmt":"2015-09-14T08:55:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pio.mfa.gov.ct.tr\/majority-believe-in-possibility-of-a-solution\/"},"modified":"2015-09-14T11:55:59","modified_gmt":"2015-09-14T08:55:59","slug":"majority-believe-in-possibility-of-a-solution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pio.mfa.gov.ct.tr\/en\/majority-believe-in-possibility-of-a-solution\/","title":{"rendered":"Majority believe in possibility of a solution"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>The Greek Cypriot Politis newspaper reported a poll conducted between July 29 and August 12, that showed a rise in optimism among the Greek Cypriots \u2013 52 per cent, compared with 47 per cent who remained pessimistic.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the news, the great majority \u2013 74 per cent \u2014 of those asked believe that current talks would lead to an agreement and a referendum. \u00a0Sixty-nine per cent want the negotiations to lead to an agreement and a referendum and only 9.0 per cent opposed the prospect.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The majority agreed that \u201cthe time has come for an honourable compromise\u201d and that \u201cthe real dilemma we will face if there are referenda soon would be federation or partition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Most support the current form of solution under discussion \u2013 bi-zonal, bi-communal federation \u2013 38 per cent, against 28 per cent who oppose it. A significant section of the sample, 30 per cent, said they did not know.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Sixty-eight per cent reject a two-state solution and 60 per cent reject the current status quo.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A unified state gets the most votes \u2013 43- per cent, followed by the federation, 34 per cent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Thirty per cent do not want any kind of guarantor powers but 44 per cent said they could accept the European Union. Anything else got little support.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The poll showed that most \u2013 37 per cent \u2014 want a system of governance where a ministerial council would make decisions by majority that will include representatives from both communities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Thirty-three per cent find rotating presidency generally acceptable provided that the Greek Cypriot president would have a longer term.
