{"id":140211,"date":"2016-09-30T11:35:24","date_gmt":"2016-09-30T08:35:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pio.mfa.gov.ct.tr\/akinci-cyprus-negotiations-are-very-time-sensitive\/"},"modified":"2016-09-30T11:35:24","modified_gmt":"2016-09-30T08:35:24","slug":"akinci-cyprus-negotiations-are-very-time-sensitive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pio.mfa.gov.ct.tr\/en\/akinci-cyprus-negotiations-are-very-time-sensitive\/","title":{"rendered":"Ak\u0131nc\u0131: \u2018\u2018Cyprus negotiations are very time-sensitive\u2019\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">President Mustafa Ak\u0131nc\u0131 has said that he will be reasonable and realistic in his approach to achieving a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus issue.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Both parties have entered a period of intensified negotiations ahead of the 2016 deadline.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If a settlement is not reached due to factors that are not related to the Turkish Cypriot side, Ak\u0131nc\u0131 reiterated that he will do what is necessary.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">However, the President believes that \u201cwe should concentrate on the positive scenario for today because a settlement can be achieved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">President Mustafa Ak\u0131nc\u0131 went on an official visit to New York on 20\u00a0September primarily to hold three meetings with the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon as part of the Cyprus negotiations. Ak\u0131nc\u0131 returned to the TRNC yesterday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ak\u0131nc\u0131 firmly believes that everyone, including Ban Ki-moon, is aware of how important and time-sensitive these negotiations are.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a phone call yesterday, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon stated that he will maintain regular contact with both parties in order to\u00a0contribute to the process.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In addition, Ak\u0131nc\u0131 said that requesting a schedule on how both parties will proceed with the negotiations shows that the Turkish Cypriots are sincere in wanting a solution. Ak\u0131nc\u0131 criticized the attitude of those on the Greek Cypriot side who are opposed to a federal settlement and mapping out the best process for the negotiations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0\u201cIn fact, this is extremely misleading. The calendar is clear and it has started to work.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We see the forthcoming process will be in three stages.\u00a0The first stage, the Leaders\u2019 meeting,\u00a0is likely to take place on Tuesday, 4 October 2016.\u00a0We will adhere to our programme and work on 4 chapters.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The second stage would be a Camp style meeting, which will focus on the issue of territory and boundaries. It would be preferable if this meeting were to take place abroad.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Issues of territory, security and guarantees will not be part of the agenda of a five-party multilateral conference\u2019\u2019 Ak\u0131nc\u0131 added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ak\u0131nc\u0131 reiterated that discussing the territory issue in an environment where there are exaggerated and speculative press reports in South Cyprus is not possible, and thus they are considering alternatives.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The third stage would be a five party multilateral conference.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A settlement on the island would also help develop Greek-Turkish relations, Ak\u0131nc\u0131 noted.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A settlement that does not guarantee our equality, security and freedom is not a solution that can be approved by the Turkish Cypriot people, President Ak\u0131nc\u0131 added.
