{"id":141117,"date":"2017-12-28T12:47:27","date_gmt":"2017-12-28T09:47:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pio.mfa.gov.ct.tr\/archbishop-accused-of-spreading-bigotry\/"},"modified":"2017-12-28T12:47:27","modified_gmt":"2017-12-28T09:47:27","slug":"archbishop-accused-of-spreading-bigotry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pio.mfa.gov.ct.tr\/en\/archbishop-accused-of-spreading-bigotry\/","title":{"rendered":"Archbishop accused of spreading bigotry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Greek Cypriot Archbishop Hrisostomos II has been accused of &#8220;instilling bigotry and\u00a0spreading hatred instead of love,&#8221; following a divisive memorandum\u00a0that was read and shared in all the churches at Christmas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As reported in the Greek Cypriot daily newspaper Haravgi, under the headline \u201cArchbishop\u2019s Bigotry Message,&#8221; Archbishop Hrisostomos again stated in his Christmas message that he was against the Cyprus negotiations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hrisostomos also made the unfounded and baseless assertion that, \u201cRefugees were sent to the Greek Cypriot side\u00a0by Turkey in order to change the national and cultural identity of the Greek Cypriots\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The AKEL party in South Cyprus accused Hrisostomos II of &#8220;instilling hatred and bigotry&#8221; and emphasized that \u201cextreme and separatist political views are criminal offenses.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Describing the statements of Archbishop Hrisostomos II as an outrage to the church, Christian values, and Greek Cypriot society, AKEL further stated that being silent in the face of these provocative statements by the Archbishop would be connivance.
