{"id":142139,"date":"2020-02-21T12:27:35","date_gmt":"2020-02-21T09:27:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pio.mfa.gov.ct.tr\/union-of-turkish-bar-associations-maras-is-within-the-sovereignty-area-of-the-trnc\/"},"modified":"2020-02-21T12:27:35","modified_gmt":"2020-02-21T09:27:35","slug":"union-of-turkish-bar-associations-maras-is-within-the-sovereignty-area-of-the-trnc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pio.mfa.gov.ct.tr\/en\/union-of-turkish-bar-associations-maras-is-within-the-sovereignty-area-of-the-trnc\/","title":{"rendered":"Union of Turkish Bar Associations: \u201cMara\u015f is within the sovereignty area of the TRNC\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">The Union of Turkish Bar Associations has issued a final communiqu\u00e9 in respect of the recently held round table meeting on the fenced-off city of Mara\u015f entitled \u201cThe Legal, Political and Economic Aspects of the Mara\u015f Initiative\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">In the written statement, it was stated that the participants of the meeting, including academics, legal experts and representatives of civil society organisations, had reached a consensus on various aspects concerning the fenced-off city.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">It pointed out that the European Union (EU), in violation of international law, had made a huge strategic mistake on May 1, 2004, by allowing South Cyprus to join the bloc before a solution was reached with Turkish Cypriots on the island.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u201cIt has emerged that it is not possible to reach a comprehensive settlement in Cyprus that envisages sharing power and wealth on the basis of political and sovereign equality due to the Greek Cypriot side\u2019s intransigent stance,\u201d the communiqu\u00e9 stated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Highlighting the need to change the status of Mara\u015f, which has been closed since 1974, the final communiqu\u00e9 pointed out that the fenced-off city was an extension of Gazima\u011fusa, the sovereignty and land belongs to the TRNC but the properties built on this land might have different owners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">The communiqu\u00e9 also stated that the TRNC had made historic moves by including a two-state solution and the Mara\u015f initiative in its government programme.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">It pointed out that the most effective tool to proceed with the reopening of Mara\u015f was the TRNC Immovable Property Commission (IPC).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u201cThe IPC, which is recognised by the European Court of Human Rights as an effective domestic remedy, is the most suitable tool for this initiative.
