{"id":142153,"date":"2020-03-09T13:45:52","date_gmt":"2020-03-09T10:45:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pio.mfa.gov.ct.tr\/akinci-an-olive-branch-should-have-been-extended\/"},"modified":"2020-03-09T13:45:52","modified_gmt":"2020-03-09T10:45:52","slug":"akinci-an-olive-branch-should-have-been-extended","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pio.mfa.gov.ct.tr\/en\/akinci-an-olive-branch-should-have-been-extended\/","title":{"rendered":"Ak\u0131nc\u0131: \u2018An olive branch should have been extended\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">President Mustafa Ak\u0131nc\u0131 made a written statement via social media on the issue of the Greek Cypriot police using tear gas at the peaceful protest at Lokmac\u0131 Gate on Saturday 7<sup>th<\/sup> March.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">President Ak\u0131nc\u0131 said \u2018Although there have been no confirmed cases of the Coronavirus found so far on either side of the island, and the Bi-communal Health Committee had reached an agreement that no further measures were needed to be taken at the crossing points, the unilateral decision of the Greek Cypriot Administration to close the border gates and use tear gas against the protestors is a disproportionate force. Tear gas should not have been sprayed on people who were holding a peaceful demonstration for opening the border gates and the development of inter-communal relations, instead perhaps an olive branch should have been extended to them. The decision, which is deemed unnecessary by all parties, must be corrected as early as possible.
