President\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Ersin<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Tatar received the UN Secretary-General\u2019s Special Representative in Cyprus and Head of UNFICYP Elizabeth\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Spehar<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

During the meeting, President Tatar expressed the new approach and policy to his collocutors to reach a settlement in Cyprus. Pointing out that negotiations for a federation have been left behind, Tatar said that an agreement should be reached on the basis of sovereign equality and two states and he asked\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Spehar<\/span><\/span>\u00a0to convey this to the UN Secretary General.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Stressing that due to the demand of the Greek Cypriot side, unfair isolations and restrictions have been imposed on the Turkish Cypriots by the international community and excluded from the world for a long period of time, Tatar said that during that time, the only supporter of the Turkish Cypriots was the Republic of Turkey.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

During the meeting, Tatar also stressed that direct flights should start in the direction of confidence building measures between the two sides, the Green Line Regulation should become more effective, foreign national tourists and investors should not be detained at the crossing points and especially\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Lokmac\u0131<\/span><\/span>\u00a0border gate should be opened.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Furthermore, on the issue of the Covid-19 pandemic, pointing out that while there are about 200 cases a day in the Greek Cypriot side, there are about 5-6 cases in the TRNC, Tatar stressed that the Greek Cypriot side has closed many border gates due to political reasons.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

At the meeting, where the issue of\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Mara\u015f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0was also brought to the agenda, upon\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Spehar’s<\/span><\/span>\u00a0well-known views and warnings, President Tatar said that this move was a game-changer step to open up to the former residents of\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Mara\u015f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0which became a symbol of the status quo as foreseen in the UN resolutions.\u00a0 Tatar also expressed that it is aimed to return it to its owners by means of the Immovable Property Commission in the TRNC, which is also recognised by the Court of Human Rights, therefore it is in accordance with international law, and that there are intense demands and applications from Greek citizens on this issue.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
