TRNC Minister of Foreign Affairs Tahsin Ertu\u011frulo\u011flu stated that as the Turkish side, they came to a policy based on the existence of two separate states having sovereign equality and equal international status on the Island.<\/p>\n
\u00a0Minister Ertu\u011frulo\u011flu made an assessment to the Anadolu Agency correspondent regarding the Cyprus issue and the reactions to his statements on the “recognition of the TRNC” during his visit to Pakistan.<\/p>\n
Ertu\u011frulo\u011flu argued that the claims made by some dailies that he did not want the recognition of the TRNC did not reflect the truth.<\/p>\n
The Minister said that such claims were not convincing as he was someone who had dedicated his entire life for the recognition of the TRNC.<\/p>\n
Ertu\u011frulo\u011flu said, “Since the beginning of negotiation processes of the Cyprus issue until today, we have shied away from the recognition of the TRNC. This should not be interpreted as we do not want the TRNC to be recognized. There will be some conjunctural conditions to come to the point of asking for recognition. Of course, we couldn’t come to the point of asking for recognition in the negotiation processes, which were described as ‘inter-communal talks, that stole our 60 years, which I have always criticized, ‘. We tried to realize our recognition within the negotiation process without bringing an active recognition policy on the agenda.<\/p>\n
\nExplaining that the policy carried out by the Turkish Cypriot side today is that the process of inter-communal negotiations on the Island has collapsed, Ertu\u011frulo\u011flu also stated that this process will never be repeated.<\/p>\n
\nErtu\u011frulo\u011flu said, “We have come to a policy of the existence of two separate states having sovereign equality and equal international status on the Island. In this context, demanding sovereign equality and equal international status should not be interpreted as demanding the recognition of the TRNC. In diplomacy, demanding the recognition of the TRNC is different from demanding the acknowledgement of equal international status”.<\/p>\n
\nExpressing that the policy that there is only one state on the Island should be eliminated, Ertu\u011frulo\u011flu pointed out that the fact that this state, which represents the Greek Cypriots and is recognized as the “Republic of Cyprus” is not the only state of the Island should be revealed.<\/p>\n
Ertu\u011frulo\u011flu continued as follows:<\/p>\n
“These two states (the so-called Republic of Cyprus and the TRNC) must have equal international status so that new negotiation processes can come to the fore. Recognition will come afterwards. Replying to a question during my visit to Pakistan last week, I have said that we have demanded recognition neither from Pakistan nor from Azerbaijan. However, the main principle of our foreign policy is the existence of equal international status and two states on the island. The reality of ‘one island, two states’ must be revealed.<\/p>\n
Mentioning that the existence of a state cannot be measured by its recognition, Ertu\u011frulo\u011flu pointed out that the whole world knows that the TRNC exists, but only Turkey has come to the point of recognizing the TRNC.<\/p>\n

Reminding that the informal 5+UN Cyprus meeting was held in Geneva on 27-29 April upon the call of the UN Secretary General, Ertu\u011frulo\u011flu stated that on the ground that there was no common ground, the UN Secretary General closed the meeting by stating that he would call another informal meeting within 2-3 months.<\/p>\n
Ertu\u011frulo\u011flu continued his speech as follows:<\/p>\n
\u201cThe UN Secretary General also knows that there is no common ground between the two sides in Cyprus. As long as they recognize the Greek Cypriot side as the so-called ‘Republic of Cyprus’ and see the Turkish Cypriot side as a ‘so-called coommunity’ of that state, there will be no common ground. It is high time that the Secretary-General should convene a meeting again and announce his final decision that ‘there is no common ground’. The Secretary General also knows that this is the case, but he is playing for time not to declare it.”<\/p>\n
Ertu\u011frulo\u011flu said that the “one island, two states” policy will be brought to the agenda as soon as the world, especially the UN, adopts a policy in line with the realities of the Cyprus issue and added that following the acknowledgement of this, they could move to an active policy towards seeking the recognition of the TRNC.<\/p>\n
