President Ersin Tatar made assessments to the press following his meeting with the Deputy Secretary-General for Europe, Central Asia and the Americas in the United Nations Department of Political and Peace building Affairs, Miroslav Jen\u010da.<\/p>\n
In his statement,\u00a0Tatar said that Jenca’s visit,\u00a0before the 78th UN General Assembly in New York in September,\u00a0was aimed\u00a0at finding out\u00a0whether common ground\u00a0exists between the two sides\u00a0for formal negotiations.\u00a0Regarding the construction work going on in the Pile-Yi\u011fitler road, another subject that was discussed,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Tatar\u00a0stressed that he explained to Jen\u010da that the matter was a humanitarian one\u00a0and should therefore be treated in this context.<\/p>\n
Tatar noted that\u00a0roads, constructions, universities, shopping centres, etc.,\u00a0which were\u00a0built by the Greek Cypriot side in\u00a0the Buffer\u00a0Zone\u00a0were not interfered with\u00a0by UNFICYP.\u00a0In\u00a0addition to this, nearly 300\u00a0concrete\u00a0military positions\u00a0were constructed\u00a0along\u00a0the Buffer Zone\u00a0as well as\u00a012 kilometres of\u00a0barbed-wire fences.<\/p>\n
The President also stated that the attitude of the United Nations\u00a0Peacekeeping Forces\u00a0in these\u00a0areas\u00a0towards the Turkish Cypriot side, particularly at\u00a0the start of the construction of the Pile-Yi\u011fitler\u00a0Road is\u00a0totally unacceptable;\u00a0\u00a0UNFICYP must\u00a0approach\u00a0the two\u00a0sides impartially and\u00a0maintain\u00a0an equal distance, in the same\u00a0manner\u00a0as\u00a0\u00a0within the Mission of Good Offices.<\/p>\n
President\u00a0Tatar\u00a0further\u00a0stated\u00a0that the roadwork should continue, adding\u00a0that Jenca also looked favourably\u00a0upon this, and expressed\u00a0the\u00a0hope that this issue would be resolved at the earliest possible time.<\/p>\n
