{"id":143713,"date":"2024-07-26T11:37:01","date_gmt":"2024-07-26T08:37:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pio.mfa.gov.ct.tr\/turkish-national-security-council-reiterates-turkiyes-position-on-cyprus\/"},"modified":"2024-07-26T11:37:01","modified_gmt":"2024-07-26T08:37:01","slug":"turkish-national-security-council-reiterates-turkiyes-position-on-cyprus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pio.mfa.gov.ct.tr\/en\/turkish-national-security-council-reiterates-turkiyes-position-on-cyprus\/","title":{"rendered":"Turkish National Security Council reiterates T\u00fcrkiye\u2019s position on Cyprus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Turkish National Security Council<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>(NSC)<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>reaffirmed Cyprus&#8217;s two-state solution, advocating for Turkish Cypriots&#8217; sovereign equality and international recognition of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).<\/p>\n<p>A declaration was issued after the meeting of NSC held at the Presidential Complex under the chairmanship of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan.<\/p>\n<p>In the declaration, the following statements were made regarding Cyprus and the Mediterranean:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our firm commitment to resolving the Cyprus issue, which is our national cause, through a two-state solution based on the Turkish Cypriot people&#8217;s sovereign equality and equal international status, as well as the recognition of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus as an equal member of the international community, will be maintained.<\/p>\n<p>T\u00fcrkiye&#8217;s Cyprus Peace Operation ensures 50 years of peace and security on island, affirming its legitimacy,\u201d the National Security Council said.<\/p>\n<p>It was stated in the declaration that the island of Cyprus has been mired in a decades-long dispute between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, despite a series of diplomatic efforts to achieve a comprehensive settlement. Ethnic attacks starting in the early 1960s forced Turkish Cypriots to withdraw into enclaves for their safety.<\/p>\n<p>In 1974, a Greek Cypriot coup aimed at Greece\u2019s annexation of the island led to T\u00fcrkiye\u2019s military intervention as a guarantor power to protect Turkish Cypriots from persecution and violence.
