Foreign Minister Tahsin Ertu\u011frulo\u011flu stated that the federal solution chapter has been closed for good, saying that it is not possible to establish and sustain a partnership state with the Greek Cypriots.<\/p>\n
Speaking to the Turkish News Agency Cyprus (TAK) regarding recent developments on the Cyprus issue, Minister Ertu\u011frulo\u011flu emphasized that a new chapter was opened following the collapse of federal-based negotiations at Crans Montana in 2017, after nearly 60 years of talks. He underlined that only an agreement based on cooperation between two sovereign and equal states on the island can be possible.<\/p>\n
Ertu\u011frulo\u011flu stressed that it is unrealistic to expect justice, which the international community, particularly the UN Security Council and the European Union, the institutions that have ignored the legitimate rights and interests of the Turkish Cypriots and have played a key role in sustaining the status quo on the island, has failed to deliver, to suddenly prevail and recognize the Greek Cypriots\u2019 intransigence while rewarding the Turkish Cypriots.<\/p>\n
Minister Ertu\u011frulo\u011flu emphasized that the only way forward for the Turkish Cypriots is to stand behind their ever-strengthening state, with the unwavering support of T\u00fcrkiye.<\/p>\n
Stating that past experience has made it clear that reaching an agreement is impossible unless the existence of two states on the island is recognized, Ertu\u011frulo\u011flu underlined that there can be no stepping back from the sovereign equality and reiterated that establishing and sustaining\u00a0a partnership state with the Greek Cypriots is not possible.<\/p>\n
Minister Ertu\u011frulo\u011flu said it is not realistic to expect any meaningful action from the European Union, which has either remained silent or been complicit in the injustices committed against the Turkish Cypriots over the years.<\/p>\n
Ertu\u011frulo\u011flu stressed that the existence of two sovereign states and two peoples on the island is a reality known to the world and defending this reality does not mean surrendering sovereignty to Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides, rather, it means protecting the inherent rights of the Turkish Cypriots.<\/p>\n
Minister Ertu\u011frulo\u011flu stated that the motive behind Greek Cypriots\u2019 will to resume negotiations for a federal solution is to buy time and perpetuate the status quo, allowing them to both reinforce their illegitimate and unlawful claim to the title \u201cRepublic of Cyprus,\u201d and to continue subjecting the Turkish Cypriot people to inhumane isolation. He firmly emphasized this clear agenda cannot and should not be tolerated.<\/p>\n
Concluding his remarks, Minister Ertu\u011frulo\u011flu reaffirmed that the only realistic solution in Cyprus is a model based on cooperation between two sovereign states living as good neighbours, and encouraged all political parties to contribute constructively to this vision.<\/p>\n
