The Minister of Foreign Affairs Tahsin Ertu\u011frulo\u011flu stated that \u201cthere is no longer any possibility of two former parties establishing a new partnership on the island\u201d, adding \u201cThe future of the island will be shaped by the neighbourly relations between two sovereign, equal states.\u201d<\/p>\n
Stressing that despite years of negotiations, the Cyprus problem has not been solved, Minister Ertu\u011frulo\u011flu added, \u201cThe United Nations (UN) Security Council is an organization that has stolen 60 years from the Turkish Cypriots.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ertu\u011fruloglu, who visited the US last week for the UN General Assembly, spoke to journalists in Washington, where he described Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan\u2019s call in his UN speech for international recognition of the TRNC as \u201chighly meaningful and extremely important.\u201d<\/p>\n
Recalling the support for the two-state solution based on the recognition of the sovereign equality and equal international status of Turkish Cypriots, Ertu\u011frulu\u011flu added \u201cThe Turkish side\u2019s stance on the Cyprus problem and its priorities have once again been put on record with great determination.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ertu\u011frulo\u011flu stated that the Cyprus problem began with Resolution 186, adopted by the UN Security Council on 4 March 1964, noting, \u201cThis resolution contains the phase \u2018Government of Cyprus.\u2019 This is where the mistake begins. This mistake which began in March 1964, has caused the Cyprus problem to remain on the international community\u2019s agenda to this day and to be sustained.\u201d<\/p>\n
Reiterating that Maria Angela Holguin Cueller, the UN Secretary-General\u2019s Personal Representative for Cyprus, had been reappointed, Foreign Minister Ertu\u011frulo\u011flu added that Holguin\u2019s contacts would not result in a situation where common ground could be established.<\/p>\n
Responding to a question regarding military activity in the Greek Cypriot area, Ertu\u011frulo\u011flu underlined that as long as the Turkish Armed Forces remain in the TRNC, there will be no military threat to the Turkish Cypriots.<\/p>\n
On reports that the Greek Cypriot Administration is being used as a base to transport ammunition to Israel, he warned that the Greek side backed by Israel and possibly the US might even consider a military move against T\u00fcrkiye. The Minister noted that Washington lifted its arms embargo on the Greek Cypriot administration in 2021 and is now supplying it with weapons and training its soldiers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
