President Tufan Erh\u00fcrman held a press briefing at the TRNC Presidency at 8:15pm. yesterday evening\u00a0 \u00a0after the meeting attended by the Leader of the Greek Cypriot Administration, Nikos Christodoulides, and the UN Secretary-General\u2019s Personal Envoy on Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin and lasted approximately 3 and a half hours.<\/p>\n
President Erh\u00fcrman announced that some concrete progress was achieved during yesterday\u2019s trilateral meeting held under the headings of halloumi registration, arrangements at the crossing points, and the methodology for the solution process.<\/p>\n
Erh\u00fcrman stated that the completion of the halloumi registration issue, which is included in his ten-point proposal, was clarified to be finalized by the end of January, and that a decision had been reached to increase staffing levels at all crossing points.<\/p>\n
Noting that Greek Cypriot Leader Nikos Christodoulides informed him that seven booths at Metehan (Ayios Dhometios) would continue operating actively, Erh\u00fcrman stated that there was a consensus on issuing vehicle road permits in Bostanc\u0131 (Astomeros\/Zodeia) and Derinya (Dherynia).<\/p>\n
Erh\u00fcrman emphasized that the joint statement reaffirmed the fundamental objective, which is the solution of the Cyprus issue, adding, \u201cThe fundamental goal, as we have always said, is not merely to discuss confidence-building measures; the fundamental goal is the solution of the Cyprus issue.\u201d<\/p>\n
He explained that the emphasis on the solution was shaped by the principle of political equality, as defined in the United Nations Security Council resolutions, Erh\u00fcrman stated that the text did not include any explicit reference to a particular solution model. Furthermore, he pointed out that the statement included wording affirming that decisions in areas of common sovereignty should be taken.<\/p>\n
Erh\u00fcrman stressed that the emphasis on political equality did not mean that the first element of their four-step methodology had been fully accepted, stating, \u201cThis represents only part of the first step.
