{"id":152188,"date":"2026-05-21T10:49:44","date_gmt":"2026-05-21T07:49:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pio.mfa.gov.ct.tr\/?p=152188"},"modified":"2026-05-22T10:50:39","modified_gmt":"2026-05-22T07:50:39","slug":"president-erdogan-and-president-of-ec-von-der-leyen-hold-phone-talk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pio.mfa.gov.ct.tr\/en\/president-erdogan-and-president-of-ec-von-der-leyen-hold-phone-talk\/","title":{"rendered":"President Erdo\u011fan and President of EC von der Leyen hold phone talk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">President of the Republic of T\u00fcrkiye Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan\u00a0held a telephone conversation with President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the call, President Erdo\u011fan emphasised the need to update the Customs Union and also addressed ongoing regional tensions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a statement issued by the Turkish Presidency\u2019s Communications Directorate\u2019s NSosyal account, the conversation <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">focused on T\u00fcrkiye-European Union relations as well as regional and global developments.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stressing that recent tensions in the region have once again demonstrated the strategic importance of T\u00fcrkiye relations, during which they focused on resolving issues of mutual concern so as to strengthen the economic integration, President Erdo\u011fan noted that T\u00fcrkiye\u2019s participation in Europe\u2019s security initiatives would be beneficial, that the Customs Union should be updated, and that it is important to enhance the cooperation in every area.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a post on her personal X account, Ursula von der Leyen described the conversation with Erdo\u011fan as \u201cvery good\u201d, stating that \u201cT\u00fcrkiye is a key partner in a turbulent region\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cT\u00fcrkiye is a critical ally in the region,\u201d said von der Leyen, adding, \u201cWe also discussed the Eastern Mediterranean and the Cyprus issue. We emphasised the importance of EU-T\u00fcrkiye relations.
