Hristofidis “We do not tell the truth in schools about what led to 1974”

According to a report by the Greek Cypriot newspaper Fileleftheros, “The University of Cyprus” Rector Konstantinos Hristofidis said that “Today, we do not tell the truth to children in our schools, or rather we do not tell the truth about the facts that caused 1974. Teachers only mention the nationalist reasons on national anniversaries and they are equipping the children with animosity.”

For Hristofidis, this is a big mistake, even a crime. “Raising children with lies and false feelings is different to enhancing their creativity and imagination”, he added.

“We should therefore focus on education orientated towards peace, tolerance, and friendship. We should accept the mistakes in the past and build strong cooperative ties in this regard for the future.”
