7 June, 2017Holding a press conference at the UN Headquarters, Special Adviser Espen Barth Eide spoke about the reconvention of the Conference on Cyprus and said that they are happy to have reached this point, but that there are more things that still needed to be done.
Stating that the meeting between the two leaders and UN Secretary-General was held in a “frank and honest” environment, Eide said that the conference date will be decided after the meeting with officials from Turkey, Greece, the UK and the EU.
“The Geneva conference will reconvene “probably in the latter part of June”, said Eide.
Responding to a question regarding the role of Turkey in this process, Eide said that a strong dialogue is underway with Turkey, and added that the Turkish authorities told him that a solution would be in the best interests of both Turkey and the region.
Regarding the end date of the Geneva conference, Special Envoy Eide said, “It will be an open ended process”.
