Stating that the Turkish Cypriot side is ready to fulfil its responsibilities, President Mustafa Akıncı said that the same is expected from the Greek Cypriot side and Greece.

Holding a press conference at the Ercan Airport on his return from New York, President Akıncı said that the joint statement issued by United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres following the tripartite meeting in New York, clarified that there will not be any preconditions and that all chapters will be discussed in parallel.

President Akıncı said that the Conference on Cyprus will reconvene in the second half of June in Geneva and is expected to last for a few weeks.

Akıncı stated that the chapter on Security and Guarantees will be discussed at the meeting in Geneva with the participation of the guarantor countries, the UK, Turkey and Greece, in parallel with other outstanding issues which have not been agreed upon yet.

Emphasizing that the conference should reach a solution, Akıncı said that an agreement can only be reached if all sides take reciprocal steps.

President Akıncı said, “We have already demonstrated that we can take the necessary decisions, now we need to see that the primary objective of the Greek Cypriot side is also to reach a solution. However, political concerns and also concerns regarding the upcoming election are now in the foreground in the South”.
