19 July, 2021Prime Minister Ersan Saner said that the coup staged in Cyprus on the 15th of July 1974 aimed to turn Cyprus into a Greek island and an Hellenic Cyprus Republic was established soon after the coup.”
“We drew lessons from the past and we do not want to experience the 15th of July 1974 situation again, that’s why we want our sovereignty to be accepted and we are in favour of a two-state solution,” Saner said in a message issued to mark the anniversaries of the fascist coup carried out by the Greek Junta and the FETÖ led coup attempt in Turkey in 2016.
Prime Minister Saner said that the coup attempted in Turkey five years ago designed and planned by foreign actors was aimed at preventing Turkey from strengthening further and to keep Turkey’s hands away from a wider geography which also included Cyprus. “The TRNC would have been harmed the most if that coup attempt had been successful,” he added. “Our youth should know the history and be aware of the games being played against the Turkish nation and the Turkish Cypriots, so that we can take firmer steps towards the future,” Saner said, reminding that it was the Greek Cypriots who had violated the constitution of the 1960 Republic in an attempt to transform Cyprus into a Greek island. “No matter what they do we will continue on our path in peace together with motherland Turkey” Saner stressed. Referring to the coup attempt in Turkey, the Prime Minister said that the plans of the foreign actors and their local collaborators had been foiled thanks to the Turkish people who stood behind democracy, their independence, security and state. “We need to be aware and strong. A strong Turkey means a strong TRNC. Turkey’s security is our security and its independence is our independence. We have a common faith”.
