Üstel: “How can we build trust with such an approach?”
27 August, 2026President Tufan Erhürman said that United Nations Secretary-General’s Personal Representative Maria Angela Holguín is expected to visit the island towards the end of the first week of September, adding that he and Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides had agreed to meet once a week, in line with his earlier proposal.
Following the leaders’ meeting, Erhürman issued a written statement noting that the meeting had taken place against the backdrop of negative developments in recent days.
He stated that these developments had eroded confidence and were contrary to the spirit of confidence-building measures.
The President stressed that the Turkish Cypriot side was ready to make progress on issues including mine clearance, the opening of new crossing points, and citizenship rights for children of mixed marriages, sports, combating irregular migration, and cooperation in disaster management.
Erhürman reaffirmed that they would continue to work in good faith, in line with the Turkish Cypriot people’s will for a settlement. He added that they would continue to raise their concerns over developments that could pose risks to the process while assessing the sincerity of all parties through direct dialogue.
