21 September, 2016President Mustafa Akıncı departs for New York today as part of an official visit to the 71st United Nations General Assembly.
After the second round of the ongoing intensified negotiations – which aim to find a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem – the leaders will meet with the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. The leaders will inform Mr Ban about the negotiation process and ask him to become more personally engaged in the process in order to find a solution to the Cyprus issue.
President Akıncı will meet with the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Saturday 24 September, 2016.
The tripartite meeting between the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, President Mustafa Akıncı and the Greek Cypriot Leader Nikos Anastasiades is expected to be held on the 25th of September.
During his stay in New York, it is expected that Akıncı will meet the US Vice President Joe Biden, US Secretary of State John Kerry and the British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, as well as other authorities.
Akıncı will also meet Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who will be in New York for the 71st United Nations General Assembly.
Akıncı, his wife Meral Akıncı and the accompanying delegation, will return to the island on 29 September.
