13 October, 2016Akıncı received US Assistant Secretary Nuland
14 October, 2016During his meeting with the Greek Cypriot Leader Nikos Anastasiades, President Mustafa Akıncı stated that both Leaders focused on the remaining points of the central government’s decision-making process which are yet to be agreed. Some areas of this process were finalised at yesterday’s meeting.
President Akıncı also said that during his meeting with Victoria Nuland, the US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, he outlined the reasons for the Turkish Cypriot people’s concerns about security.
“We explained to Nuland the reasons why Turkish Cypriots have had concerns about security for all these years. Why do the Turkish Cypriots not want any future federation to be put at risk? What guarantees are there for us to keep this federation safe? Are there reasonable grounds for this? We are sure that she understood us very well.”
Akıncı also stated that the US had not proposed a plan and its current position supports the peace process.
Nuland stated that she was satisfied with both Leaders’ efforts towards reaching a settlement on the island.
She said that the Leaders have put forward very creative ideas towards reaching a solution and good progress has been made.
Nuland reiterated that the US is a friend and a supporter of the Cypriot negotiations.
