Akıncı: “Our goal is to minimize our divergences as much as possible”

Upon his return to the Presidential Palace after the meeting with the Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Anastasiades, President Mustafa Akıncı told reporters that the two leaders discussed recent developments and set the agenda for the next six meetings of the intensified negotiation process. As they are entering a new and intensified round of negotiations which will have lasting implications for the Cyprus issue, Akıncı said that they aimed to reduce the existing divergences as much as possible.

The upcoming three week period is crucial, Akıncı noted. Depending on what has been agreed in the negotiations, the two leaders want the talks to pave the way for the five-party conference.

President Akıncı also stated that they agreed not to make statements after every meeting but there might be a joint statement following the final meeting on September 14.
