8 March, 2019Töre: “The sole security and guarantee of the Turkish Cypriots are Turkey and the presence of the Turkish Army”
8 March, 2019The Republican Turkish Party (CTP) MP Armağan Candan drew attention to the unfair restrictions applied to the Turkish Cypriots in sports at the meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) in Paris.
In his speech he made during the discussion of the sports report at the Committee on Equality and Avoiding Discrimination, Candan reminded of the international restrictions and human rights violations imposed on Turkish Cypriot youth in the field of sports.
Stressing that Turkish Cypriots could not participate in international tournaments in many sports branches and could not even arrange mutual friendship matches, and that this was not an acceptable situation, Candan pointed out that the right to participate in international sporting activities is one of the basic rights of each individual and that Turkish Cypriots living in European geography have faced serious restrictions in this field for many years.
Stating that South Korean and North Korean athletes, despite the political problem, are able to attend the Olympic Games together, Candan added that he can give some examples of other places where they have political issues. Candan also emphasized that the main goal of sports is to bring people closer and contribute to peace.
