Energy Cooperation Agreement signed between Turkey and the TRNC

A comprehensive Energy Cooperation Agreement has been signed between Turkey and the TRNC.

The agreement was signed by the Economy and Energy Minister Sunat Atun and Turkey’s Energy and Natural Resources Minister Berat Albayrak at the 23^rd World Economy Congress.

Under the agreement, electricity will be supplied undersea from Turkey to the TRNC via cable link.

According to sources, the agreement also includes the renewal of electricity infrastructure, development of electricity security of supply, the construction of an interconnected system, mutual cooperation on renewable energy, the application of electricity regulations and oil and gas exploration.

Atun said that Turkey has become one of the most powerful countries in the region and the world, and that Turkey is in a strategic position for energy.

“The TurkStream is one of the biggest projects of global energy expansion. The TRNC and Turkey had made a cooperation agreement in the energy field in 2011 in order to facilitate oil and gas exploration on land and sea. Today we have reached a point where we have made a major historic agreement, whereby the TRNC takes a position on the international stage.”

Atun also highlighted the water supply project from Turkey which has recently been implemented, and said that this agreement between Turkey and the TRNC has much larger potential.

According to Atun, this project will make it possible to transfer electricity to southern parts of the Middle East.
“I hope that another project will allow for electricity, water and natural gas to be carried to other places through the TRNC, like the TurkStream.”

Atun also stressed that he previously made a call to the Greek Cypriot side to build a mutual transmission line which would connect with Turkey, so that they could share this energy with them.

“The most suitable way to link the natural gas of the Eastern Mediterranean is via a pipeline from Turkey, in another TurkStream project. This may pave the way for peace, allowing a permanent settlement to be achieved.”
In his speech, Albayrak said that the electricity deal with the TRNC will contribute not only to the wellbeing of the TRNC but also to the region at large.
