Erenköy Resistance and the Martyrs remembered

Erenköy Resistance on August 8, 1964, which is one of the turning points in the history of the Turkish Cypriot struggle and those who lost their lives during this resistance, was commemorated yesterday (8th August).

 

The ceremony was held with the participation of President Mustafa Akıncı, Speaker of the TRNC Assembly Teberrüken Uluçay, Prime Minister Ersin Tatar, state and government officials, as well as Turkish Defence Minister Hulusi Akar, Chief of Turkish General Staff Full General Yaşar Güler and Force Commanders.

 

Many university students who were then studying in Turkey and also more than 500 young Turkish Cypriot people from the UK came to the island by boats in 1964 and struggled against the Greek Cypriot attacks in a critical struggle together with the people in the Erenköy region and this has been a cornerstone in the struggle for existence of the Turkish Cypriot people.

 

18 people in 1964 and 3 people in 1974 lost their lives in Erenköy.
