24 October, 2022Foreign Affairs Minister Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu stated that the Çetinkaya Turkish Sports Club was allowed to re-use the Taksim football pitch as a result of long-term contacts with UN officials.
Speaking to BRT, Minister Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu said that the area in question is the property of the Çetinkaya Turkish Sports Club, and that after the pitch was taken out of use by Çetinkaya due to the activities of the North Cyprus Automobile Touring Association the reconversion of the football pitch is not an easy process.
Ertuğruloğlu said “the UN and especially the head of UN Mission Colin Stewart had contact with us and the TRNC Presidency in good will. In the end an agreement was reached and work has begun as of today”.
Adding that the processes were prolonged due to the unexpected reactions of the United Nations at very small points, Ertuğruloğlu stated that there is a problem with a single point regarding the Taksim football pitch.
Ertuğruloğlu said “The issue of fence that needs to be erected behind the goal post is blocked. We want the fence to be high in order to prevent the football balls to fly the other side. The fence should be at least 6 m high according to us, but we have not reached an agreement on this matter”.
