Fidan: “South Cyprus obstructs us wherever it finds the opportunity”

Foreign Minister of the Republic of Türkiye, Hakan Fidan, stated that the Greek Cypriot Administration (GCA) will soon assume the presidency of the European Union (EU) and that it obstructs Türkiye wherever it finds the opportunity on international platforms.

He said “The Greek Cypriot side poses a major obstacle between the EU and Türkiye. Unfortunately, the EU’s internal system allows the Greek Cypriots to take such actions.”

Emphasizing that they had inherited the Cyprus problem but did not want to pass it on to future generations, Minister Fidan said, ‘We are not obliged to bound to the old mindset. We can be more creative because time is passing and future generations expect us to find a solution.’

Fidan underlined that a two-state solution is the only realistic solution in Cyprus and everyone knows this, saying ‘As Türkiye, we took a positive stance on the Annan Plan and the Crans-Montana process, and Turkish Cypriots voted in favour of the UN plan. However, Greek Cypriots rejected it.’

Fidan expressed that Greek Cypriot officials would never agree to an agreement based on equal sharing of power, wealth and authority and that the alternative was a two-state solution.
