6 February, 2024TRNC Minister of Foreign Affairs Tahsin Ertuğluoğlu made assessments to the Turkish News Agency Cyprus (TAK) on current developments.
Minister Ertuğruloğlu strongly criticised Irfan Siddiq, the British High Commissioner to Southern Cyprus.
Stating that Siddiq had made it a habit to put forward views on the Cyprus issue that are out of line, Ertuğruloğlu noted that Siddiq had once again attempted to distort the facts on the Cyprus issue.
Ertuğruloğlu also evaluated the first visit of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar, to the island.
Ertuğruloğlu noted that in the light of the new vision put forward by the Turkish Cypriot side in order to overcome the deadlock in the Cyprus issue, the Turkish Cypriot side would convey to the Personal Envoy that it supports cooperation between the two States in a spirit of good neighbourly relations on the island.
The Minister added, it would be explained to Mrs.Holguin that it would not possible to return to the negotiation process on the basis of the ‘federation’ formula following the collapse of the process in Crans-Montana in 2017.
Ertuğruloğlu reiterated his criticism of the latest UN Security Council resolution on the extension of the mandate of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force on the island for one year.
He also emphasised that the Turkish Cypriot side did not approve the fact that the UN Security Council had taken the set resolution without seeking the consent of the Turkish Cypriot side.
Ertuğruloğlu added that, by ignoring the existence of two sovereign equal States on the island, the Security Council become the protector of the status quo, which constitutes the essence of the Cyprus issue.
