5 December, 2016The two leaders have agreed to restart negotiations and to meet in an international conference on 12 January.
President Mustafa Akıncı and Greek Cypriot Leader Nikos Anastasiades met at a dinner organised by the Special Adviser of the Secretary General on Cyprus, Mr. Espen Barth Eide. The two leaders discussed the recent situation and agreed to resume the negotiations.
According to a statement given by the UN spokesperson, the leaders have decided to immediately re-engage in their negotiations and have instructed their negotiators to continue meeting in order to achieve further progress on all outstanding issues interdependently.
The Leaders have also agreed to meet as soon as possible with the aim of finding a comprehensive solution.
The talks are expected to start in Geneva, Switzerland on January 9. The two sides will present their respective maps on January 11. The guarantor powers Greece, Turkey and the UK would thereafter join the conference from January 12. Additional parties will be invited to the conference, if it is necessary.
